Oakwood University's men's basketball team is feeling a little better about themselves.
The Ambassadors, who had been mired in an 11-game losing streak, snapped it last Sunday when it downed Southern University at New Orleans 84-75 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Rust College in Holly Springs, Miss.
Behind 21 points from
Nicholas Kennard (Antioch, TN), including five 3-pointers, along with solid efforts from
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) and
Felix McGhee (Montgomery, AL), Oakwood got a much-needed dose of confidence heading into today's GCAC Round Up at Wiley College's Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas.
The Ambassadors (3-18, 1-9) will take on league-leading Tougaloo College (22-1, 10-0) today at 2 p.m., before taking on home-standing Wiley College (10-10, 5-5) Saturday night at 8:30 and Southern University at New Orleans (2-18, 0-10) Sunday at noon.
Oakwood fell to Tougaloo 65-56 back on Jan. 24 at Ashby Auditorium in one of its more spirited efforts of the season.
Prophete led the way with 19 points, eight rebounds and five blocked shots, while Robert Booker (Laurel, MD) finished with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Tougaloo's Cameron Copeland is one of five Bulldogs averaging in double figures. Copeland is averaging 14.5 points, 4.9 rebounds and five assists per game.
Wiley held off Oakwood 62-58 on Jan. 13 at the GCAC Round Up at Dillard University in New Orleans.
The Ambassadors battled back from a nine-point deficit to tie the game at 53-all on a 3-pointer by Kennard with just under four minutes left, but couldn't complete the comeback. Oakwood managed just two field goals the rest of the way in the narrow loss.
Prophete finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds, while
Justin Edwards had 14 points.
Maurice Harvey, who is averaging a team-high 13.9 points per game for Wiley, led the Wildcats with 20 points.
Oakwood closes out the weekend when it takes on SUNO Sunday at noon.
The Ambassadors are trying to avoid becoming the first team to lose to the Knights in league play.
Isaiah Sanders is the only player averaging double figures with 10.1 points per game. Caleb Williams led the Knights with 15 points in the loss to Oakwood. Sanders and Devin Daniels finished with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
