10/22/2026 3:55:00 PM

NEW ORLEANS – Oakwood University was picked to finish 13th out of 16 teams in the 2026-27 HBCU Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Predicted Order of Finish, league officials announced Wednesday.

The Ambassadors, who will be led by first-year head coach Wooderson Durosier this season, received 61 points, finishing just ahead of Wiley University, Jarvis Christian University and the University of the Virgin Islands.

"I'm not surprised where we were picked to finish," said Durosier, who replaced long-time coach Simon Jacob. "We struggled last season even though we made some noise
in the tournament.

"Our guys have been working extremely hard and we believe we'll be a lot better this year. Time will tell, but I'm very optimistic about this season."

Southern University at New Orleans was picked to win the league, finishing with 200 points and 11 first-place votes.

Tougaloo was picked to finish second, followed by Stillman College, Dillard University and Talladega College rounded out the top five.

SUNO combo guard Jaylon Hicks was named the HBCUAC Preseason Player of the Year.

Hicks averaged 15.6 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.1 steals a year ago in earning first-team All-HBCUAC honors, along with being named the Freshman of the Year, All-Defensive Team and to the All-Tournament team.

Hicks was joined on the All-HBCUAC first-team preseason squad by teammate Dorian Booker, Fisk University  shooting guard Kaleb Jeffries, Stillman forward Dasean Sellers and Wilberforce forward Daiquan Coach.
