RANDlLE STARS IN SEASON OPENER, BUT OAKWOOD FALLS TO DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPION FREED-HARDEMAN

Henderson, Tenn. – Jeray Randle scored a game-high 23 points, but the rest of the team struggled as Oakwood University fell 83-53 to defending National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) national champion Freed-Hardeman Thursday night at Brewer Sports Center in the season opener for both teams.

The Ambassadors dropped to 0-1, while the Lions, ranked No. 4 in the preseason NAIA poll, improved to 1-0.

Randle was arguably the best player on the floor, finishing 8-of-15 from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line. He also had two rebounds, three steals and one assist.

Unfortunately, the rest of the team was just 13-of-40 from the field, including 0-of-8 from beyond the arc, and 4-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The Ambassadors shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field, including 25 percent (5-of-20) from 3-point range, and 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from the free throw line.

Oakwood was outscored 48-16 in the paint and 27-12 in bench points.

Peyton Law led four FHU players in double figures with 22 points. Geraldo Lane, a former Columbia High School star, finished with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including a 3-pointer. He also had eight rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot.

The Lions shot 50.8 percent (32-of-63) from the field, including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from beyond the arc, and 84.6 percent (11-of-13) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood is back in action Tuesday at Tennessee Southern. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
