WILLIAMS LEADS OAKWOOD TO CONVINCING WIN OVER UVI

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands – Oakwood University women's basketball opened the new year with a convincing 61-37 win over the University of the Virgin Islands Saturday night at the Eldridge Blake Sports and Fitness Center.

The Ambassadors raced out to a 33-16 lead at intermission and were never threatened the rest of the way. The 37 points were the fewest they have allowed this season.

Oakwood got 19 points from Nekaya Williams (Atlanta, GA) and 11 from Nariah Alexander (Southaven, MS) in snapping its three-game losing streak. The Ambassadors improved to 4-9 overall and 2-3 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference. UVI fell to 0-8 and 0-4.

Williams had one of her more complete games of the season against the Buccaneers.

She was 5-of-14 from the field, 1-of-3 from 3-point range, 8-of-11 from the free throw line to go along with nine rebounds, six assists, three steals and a block in 38 minutes.

Newcomer Jon'Toyrian McNeal (Houston, TX), playing her first game with the Ambassadors, finished with nine points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal in 23 minutes before fouling out.

Oakwood shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field, including 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range, and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the free throw line.

Brea Patterson led UVI with 17 points. Nobody else had more than seven.

The Buccaneers shot 25.6 percent (11-of-43) from the field, including 17.6 percent (3-of-17) from deep, and 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood visits Fisk University Tuesday night.
