OAKWOOD BATTLES HARD, BUT FISK PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF

  
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Oakwood University came here Tuesday night hoping to make a statement against Fisk University, one of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference's best teams.

The Ambassadors hung around for the first two quarters, trailing only 30-22 at intermission, but the Bulldogs outscored them by 11 points the rest of the way enroute to a 68-49 victory inside Henderson A. Johnson Arena.

The loss dropped Oakwood to 4-10 overall and 2-4 in league play. Fisk improved to 9-6 and 6-1 with its third straight victory.

Nekaya Williams (Atlanta, GA) led the Ambassadors with 17 points on 7-of-17 shooting, including 2-of-8 from 3-point range, and 1-of-2 from the free throw line. She also grabbed four rebounds, had three assists and two steals.

Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) finished with 11 points, while Jakyla Diawara (Tallahassee, FL) had seven points, six rebounds and three blocks.

Oakwood shot 35.6 percent (21-of-59) from the field, including 16 percent (4-of-25) from deep, and 42.9 percent (3-of-7) from the free throw line.

The Ambassadors were outrebounded 56-35, including 23-6 on the offensive end.

Maya Buckhanon led four Fisk players in double figures with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Zipporah
Davis (13), Laila Eliotti (12) and Jayla Bibbs (11) all finished in double figures.

The Bulldogs shot 32.9 percent (24-of-73) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (15-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood hosts Southern University of New Orleans Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
