OAKWOOD BASEBALL HEADS TO GCAC CHAMPIONSHIP

Oakwood University will try to do something today it hasn't done all season.

That is win a baseball game.

Oakwood (0-25) will take on Wiley College (20-18) in the 2023 Hope Credit Union Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Baseball Championship today at the Hank Aaron Sports Academy Smith-Wills Stadium. First pitch is set for noon.

The Ambassadors enter the tournament as the sixth seed, while the Wildcats are the third seed.

"We knew this season would be tough," said Oakwood coach Richard Hodnett, who is in his first season. "While our record doesn't indicate it, we've gotten better. Hopefully, we can put it all together (today)."

This is Oakwood's first season in more than a decade. The program was disbanded in 2010 due to funding, according to athletics director Simon Jacob.

The Wildcats dominated the Ambassadors in a three-game series in Huntsville last month. Wiley outscored Oakwood 59-2.

Center fielder Jorge Hernandez leads Oakwood's offensive attack with a .386 batting average and seven RBIs. He has a .460 on-base percentage, a .477 slugging percentage and a .937 on-base plus slugging percentage.

Shortstop Jeremy Matos is hitting .275 with a team-high 11 runs. He has a .373 on-base percentage, a .333 slugging percentage, and a .706 on-base plus slugging percentage.

The Ambassadors scored only 36 runs in 25 games. They are hitting .168 as a team.

Conversely, they gave up double digit runs in 24 of their 25 games. Opposing teams are hitting .425 against them. Oakwood's team ERA is 23.71 and opponents have hit 22 homers.

Wiley's Ken Woodard leads the league with a .414 batting average and ranks in the top five in home runs (6) and walks (24) and in the top 10 in runs (29), hits (36) and total bases (62).

Isaac Burciaga leads the GCAC with seven wins and won his last four starts.

The double elimination tournament runs through Sunday.
