TOUGALOO SPOILS WILLIAMS' BIG NIGHT IN GCAC OPENER

TOUGALOO, Miss. – Nekaya Williams scored a season-high 26 points, but Tougaloo College kept everybody else under control as the Bulldogs downed Oakwood University 80-64 Thursday night in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Williams (Atlanta, GA), a preseason All-GCAC first-team selection, was outstanding.

She was 9-of-17 from the field, including two 3-pointers, was 6-of-9 from the free throw line, grabbed a team-high six rebounds, three assists, two steals and three blocks while playing all 40 minutes.

"Nekaya showed why she was a first-team All-GCAC preseason pick," Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams said. "She filled up the stat sheet tonight and kept us in the game for a long time."

The loss, Oakwood's fourth straight, dropped the Ambassadors to 2-6 overall and 0-1 in league play. Tougaloo improved to 1-2 and 1-0.

Oakwood trailed 45-34 with just under seven minutes left in the third quarter, but Nariah Alexander (Southaven, MS) scored to cap a 9-3 run to pull the Ambassadors within 48-43. Unfortunately, Tougaloo scored six of the next seven points to take a 54-44 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) scored to pull Oakwood within 59-52 with just under five minutes remaining, but the Ambassadors couldn't get any closer as the Bulldogs pulled away down the stretch.

Adams backed Williams with 11 points, but was only 4-of-12 from the field. RB Mitchell (Detroit, MI) and Hannah Cohn (Decatur, AL) finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Oakwood shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field, including 20.7 percent (6-of-29) from 3-point range, and 80 percent (20-of-25) from the free throw line. The Ambassadors were outrebounded 47-23, including 21-6 on the offensive end.

Jalaceia Smith led five Tougaloo players in double figures with 15 points. Rodreckia Parker and Sharisse Bridges finished with 13 apiece, while Madelynn Webster and Morgan Williams added 11 and 10, respectively.

Brayland Ferguson had nine points and 14 rebounds off the bench for Tougaloo.

The Bulldogs shot 38.9 percent (28-of-72) from the field, including 19 percent (4-of-21) from deep, and 62.5 percent (20-of-32) from the free throw line.
