OAKWOOD WOMEN CAN'T SUSTAIN HOT START, FALLS TO SHORTER UNIVERSITY

ROME, Ga. – Oakwood University came out firing on all cylinders Wednesday night.

The Ambassadors raced out to a commanding 23-point point lead over Shorter University with just over six minutes left in the second quarter and still led 45-31 at halftime. Unfortunately, they couldn't sustain their hot start.

Oakwood managed just 20 points in the final two quarters as Shorter came from behind to hand the Ambassadors a heart-breaking 68-65 loss at the Winthrop-King Centre.

Oakwood fell to 2-3 with the loss, while Shorter, an NCAA Division II program in the Gulf South Conference, improved to 1-2.

Despite a lackluster third quarter, the Ambassadors led 55-45 entering the fourth quarter and still led 59-54 on a jumper by RB Mitchell with just under six minutes remaining, but managed only four points the rest of the way.

Shorter outscored Oakwood 23-10 in the fourth quarter, including 12-0 from the free throw line. In fact, the Hawks had a big advantage from the charity stripe, going 23-of-32, while the Ambassadors were just 7-of-8. Oakwood was called for 22 personal fouls, while Shorter was called for only 11. Oakwood also hurt itself with 21 turnovers.

The game was a tale of two halves for Oakwood.

The Ambassadors shot almost 55 percent (18-of-33) from the field in the first half, but shot just 31 percent (9-of-29) in the second half.

Mitchell (Detroit, MI) led Oakwood with 16 points and grabbed five rebounds. Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) and Nekaya Williams (Atlanta, GA) finished with 12 points apiece.

The Ambassadors shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the field, including 21.1 percent from 3-point range, and 87.5 percent (7-of-8) from the free throw line.

Tiara Lewis led Shorter with 26 points and 10 rebounds. She was 7-of-12 from the field and 12-of-18 from the foul line. Tori Smiley finished with 13 points.

The Hawks shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the field, including 6.3 percent from 3-point range, and 71.9 percent (23-of-32) from the free throw line.

Oakwood is back in action Friday at the Freed-Hardeman Classic.

The Ambassadors will take on Bethel University at 2 p.m. and Freed-Hardeman Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
