JONES, HOWARD AND NEWBY LEAD OAKWOOD TO HBCUAC SERIES WIN OVER TALLADEGA

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Anna Jones and Jordan Howard had big weekends and Emma Newby was solid in the circle as Oakwood University took two out of three games from Talladega College in an HBCU Athletic Conference softball series at University Field.
 
The Ambassadors won 9-8 on Saturday and then split Sunday's doubleheader, taking the first game 17-1, while falling in the nightcap 7-4.
 
Jones was 7-of-9, including three doubles and a triple, scored three runs and had four RBI.
 
Howard was 6-of-10, including two doubles, scored six runs and had two RBI.
 
Oakwood improved to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in league play. Talladega is now 5-20 and 5-10.
 
Game 1
 
The Ambassadors trailed 8-6 in the bottom of the eighth inning, but pushed across three runs to take a thrilling 9-8 come-from-behind victory to open the series Saturday night.
 
Jones was 3-for-4, including a double and a triple, scored two runs and had an RBI.
 
Ka'Nijha Arrington was 3-for-4 and scored a run, while Howard was 2-for-4 with a double and scored a run. Sara Tate was 2-for-4, including a double and a triple, scored a run and had two RBI.
 
Newby (9-4) got the win, allowing eight runs, four earned, on 12 hits in eight innings. She walked six and struck out six.
 
Game 2
 
Oakwood led 15-0 after two innings and was never threatened enroute to a 17-1 victory.
 
Howard went 3-for-3 with a double, scored four runs and had two RBI.
 
Jones was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, scored a run and had three RBI.
 
Toni Sims was 2-for-3 with a double, scored four runs and had two RBI, while Newby was 2-for-3 with four RBI and scored two runs.
 
Newby (10-4) got the win, allowing one run on five hits in five innings. She walked four and struck out two.
 
Game 3
 
The Tornadoes built a 5-1 lead midway through the third inning and made it stand up enroute to a 7-4 victory.
 
Arrington was 2-for-2, while Jones was 2-for-3 and scored a run.
 
Newby (10-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs, all earned, on 15 hits in seven innings. She walked six and struck out seven.
