OAKWOOD LOSES SERIES DESPITE BIG GAMES FROM HOWARD, NEWBY, AND FULLER

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University's Jordan Howard, Emma Newby, Toni Sims and Kaley Fuller all had big games, but it wasn't enough as Huston-Tillotson took two out of three games in an HBCU Athletic Conference softball series Saturday and Sunday at University Field.
 
The Rams took Saturday's opener 7-5, while the Ambassadors battled back to win Sunday's first game 7-4. Huston-Tillotson took Sunday's nightcap 9-1 to win the series.
 
Oakwood is now 8-9 overall and 4-5 in league play. Huston-Tillotson improved to 10-18 and 10-2.
 
Game 1
 
The Rams led 4-0 midway through the third inning, but Howard, who went 2-for-4, hit a three-run inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the inning to pull the Ambassadors within 4-3.
 
Huston-Tillotson pushed across two more runs in the top of the fourth to make it 6-3, but Oakwood answered with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to make a it a one-run game, but couldn't get any closer.
 
Fuller was 2-for-3 with a double and scored two runs. Newby went 2-for-4, while Ka'Nijha Arrington, Anna Jones, Sims and Sara Tate had one hit each.
 
Newby (7-5) took the loss, allowing seven runs, three earned, on eight hits in seven innings. She walked four and struck out six.
 
Game 2
 
Oakwood built a 7-1 lead after four innings and hung on take Sunday's first game.
 
The Ambassadors scored two runs in the first inning and added four more in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 advantage.
 
Howard had an RBI-double in the second, while Sims had an RBI-triple. Newby had an RBI-single in the inning and also had an RBI-double in the fourth.
 
Howard was 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI. Sims was 2-for-3, scored three times and had an RBI, while Newby was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
 
Fuller, Arrington, Jones, Rihanna King and Mary McCluskey had a hit apiece.
 
Newby (8-5) snapped a personal five-game losing streak to pick up the win. She allowed four runs, two earned, on 10 hits in seven innings. Newby walked two and struck out four.
 
Game 3
 
The Ambassadors managed just three hits in Sunday's series finale after coming away with 22 in the first two games.
 
The Rams scored three runs in the second inning to take an early lead. After Oakwood scored to make it 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Ambassadors failed to score the rest of the way.
 
Arrrington, Sims and Fuller accounted for Oakwood's only hits in the game.
 
McCluskey (0-4) took the loss, allowing nine run, five earned, on 13 hits in six innings. She walked three and struck out one.
