OAKWOOD SOFTBALL RUNS RECORD TO 7-0 BY SWEEPING RUST IN HBCUAC SERIES

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University softball ran its record to 7-0 over the weekend by sweeping its opening HBCU Athletic Conference series against Rust College, beating the Bearcats 7-0 Saturday night and 13-3 and 18-7 Sunday afternoon at University Field.
 
The Ambassadors improved to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in HBCUAC play.
 
Offensively, Jordan Howard led the way, going 6-for-9 with four doubles, seven RBI and scored six runs.
 
Ka'Nijha Arrington went 5-for-7 with two doubles, five RBI and scored three runs, while Anna Jones went 5-for-9 with a triple and a double, six RBI and scored four runs.
 
Toni Sims went 4-for-9 with two RBI and scored four runs, while Kaley Fuller went 4-for-9 with an RBI and scored six runs.
 
Mary McCluskey, Sara Tate and Nichole Tomberlain had three hits apiece.
 
Emma Newby (7-0) picked up all three wins. She allowed six runs, one earned, on seven hits in 17 innings. She walked eight and struck out 19.
 
Game 1
 
The Ambassadors led 3-0 after the first inning and added two runs in the fifth and sixth innings enroute to the 7-0 victory.
 
Sims went 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and scored two runs.
 
Arrington was 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
 
Newby allowed no runs on two hits in seven innings. She walked three and struck out 14.
 
Game 2
 
Oakwood led 6-2 after three innings, but erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to win going away.
 
Jones went 3-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and scored two runs.
 
Howard and Newby went 2-for-3 with two RBI and scored two runs each, while Arrington finished 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and scored a run.
 
Newby allowed three runs, one earned, on two hits in five innings. She walked two and struck out two.
 
Game 3
 
The Ambassadors led 11-7 midway through the fourth inning, but pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the fourth to sweep the series.
 
Fuller went 3-for-3 with an RBI and scored three runs, while Howard finished 3-for-4 with three doubles, five RBI and scored two runs.
 
Jones was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and scored two runs. Nichole Tomberlain was 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and scored three runs, while McCluskey went 2-for-3 with a double, scored two runs and had two RBI.
 
Newby allowed three runs on three hits in five innings, walked three and struck out three.
 
Oakwood is at Alabama A&M Wednesday. The doubleheader starts at 12 p.m.
