OAKWOOD IMPROVES TO 4-0 AFTER ANOTHER OUTSTANDING EFFORT FROM NEWBY

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University softball ran its record to 4-0 Monday behind another outstanding effort from freshman Emma Newby.
 
Newby was terrific at the plate and in the circle as Oakwood swept Harris-Stowe State 7-6 and 7-6 in a doubleheader at University Field.
 
Offensively, Newby was 5-for-7, including a pair of doubles, scored four runs and had three RBI. On the mound, she gave up 12 runs on 17 hits in 14 innings. She walked eight and struck out 21.
 
Game 1
 
The Ambassadors led 6-1 after five innings, but the Hornets scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 6-6.
 
Oakwood pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take the
victory.
 
Newby was 4-for-4 , including two doubles, had three RBI and scored two runs.
 
Toni Sims backed Newby by going 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Anna Jones had a double and two RBI, while Ka'Nijha Arrington, Sara Tate, Kaley Fuller and Mary McCluskey had a hit each.
 
Game 2
 
Jones and McCluskey went 2-for-3 to help Oakwood complete the sweep.
 
Jordan Howard, Fuller, Sims, Newby, Tate and Arrington all had one hit apiece.
 
Newby (4-0) allowed six runs on eight hits in seven innings to get the win. She walked six and struck out seven.
