HOWARD, SIMS AND NEWBY HELP OAKWOOD SWEEP LANE COLLEGE IN JOHNSON DEBUT

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Jordan Howard and Toni Sims were huge offensively and Emma Newby was terrific in the circle as the Darrius Johnson era got off to a great start Thursday afternoon as Oakwood University softball swept Lane College 6-0 and 13-10 at University Field in the season opening series for both teams.
 
The Ambassadors are now 2-0, while the Dragons fell to 0-2.
 
Game 1
 
Newby allowed no runs on four hits in 6.2 innings. She walked three and struck out 10.
 
Howard had an RBI-triple and scored a run, while Sims, Sara Tate and Nichole Tomberlain had RBI-doubles and scored a run apiece.
 
In addition to her work on the mound, Newby went 1-for-2 and scored a run, while Kaley Fuller scored two runs.
 
Game 2
 
The Ambassadors combined for nine runs in the fifth and sixth innings to overcome a three-run deficit to enroute to sweeping the Dragons.
 
Howard and Sims combined to go 6-for-10 with three RBI and five runs scored. Fuller, Tate and Mary McCluskey each went 2-for-4 and combined to score four runs.
 
Anna Jones went 2-for-3 with a double and scored three runs.
 
Newby (2-0) picked up the win, allowing 10 runs on 13 hits, including eight earned runs in seven innings. She walked three and struck out 10.
 
Offensively, Newby went 1-for-1 and scored two runs, while Ka'Nijha Arrington went 1-for-4 with an RBI and scored a run.
