OU WBB TOUGALOO PREGAME

Women's Basketball

ABRAMS CONCERNED ABOUT LONG LAYOFF AS OAKWOOD BEGINS SECOND HALF OF THE SEASON

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University women's basketball coach Ronnie Abrams is a little concerned about his team as the second half of the season tips off.

After opening the season, 1-4, the Ambassadors responded by winning five of their last six games before Christmas break.

After three weeks off, Oakwood will be back in action Saturday night when Tougaloo University comes to town for a non-conference game. Tipoff is 6 inside Ashby Auditorium.

"I'm concerned about the lay off," Abrams said. "The girls needed some time off, but when you're playing well, you want to keep playing. We had built some momentum during that stretch and hopefully, we can get it going again."

The Ambassadors are currently 6-5 overall and 4-0 in HBCU Athletic Conference play. Stillman College and Rust College are both 3-1 league play, followed by Talladega College at 2-2. Fisk and Wilberforce are both 1-3, while Voorhees is 0-4.

Three of Oakwood's four conference wins have come on the road. The Ambassadors have five of their last eight conference games at home.

"We can't get caught up in all of that," Abrams said. "We've got to take them one at a time. Our preparation is the key."

The Ambassadors have been led by Saniya Keys, Kamaria Murray and Trenisha Adams.

Keys, the reigning HBCUAC Player of the Year, is averaging 15.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game. Murray, who also stars for the volleyball team, is averaging 15.7 points and 4.7 rebounds, while Adams is averaging 13 points and 6.6 rebounds per game.

Saturday's contest begins a five-game homestand for Oakwood. After Tougaloo, the Ambassadors host Rust College on Jan. 8, Southeastern Baptist on Jan. 13, Talladega College on Jan. 15 and Voorhees University on Jan. 17.
