OAKWOOD BLOWS LATE LEAD, FALLS TO UVI

TALLADEGA, Ala. – Jamarkus Alexander's tip-in with 19 seconds left gave Oakwood University a late lead over the University of the Virgin Islands Saturday night, but the Ambassadors couldn't hold on as Nico Thomas' three-point play two seconds later lifted the Buccaneers to a 75-73 victory in the Talladega HBCUAC POD inside the Billy Hawkins Student Activity Center.

Oakwood led on seven different occasions over the last nine minutes, the last time coming on Alexander's tip-in that gave the Ambassadors a 73-72 advantage with 19 seconds left.

Unfortunately, Simon Jacob's team couldn't get the stop it needed on defense to secure the victory as Thomas made a layup and a free throw with 17 seconds left to give the Buccaneers the victory.

The loss, Oakwood's 12th straight, dropped the Ambassadors to 1-14 overall and 0-8 in league play. UVI improved to 4-5 and 3-3.

Oakwood's Jordan Bell led all scorers with a career-high 31 points and eight rebounds. Bell was 13-of-18 from the field.

Alexander finished with 13 points and five rebounds. He was 6-of-11 from the field.

The Ambassadors shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the field, including 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range, and 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the free throw line.

Amayoa'ah Phillips led six UVI players in double figures with 15 points.

Edwin Solis and Thomas finished with 12 apiece, while Khaleed Heywood added 11. Jalil Langston and Chad Molloy had 10 each.

The Buccaneers shot 35.9 percent (28-of-78) from the field, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 65 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood will play Wiley College Monday at 12 p.m. in the final day of the Talladega HBCUAC POD.
