OAKWOOD RUNS WINNING STREAK TO FIVE STRAIGHT GAMES AFTER HOLDING OFF WILBERFORCE

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University ran its winning streak to five straight games by holding off a late Wilberforce University rally Thursday night before coming away with a 63-60 victory in an important HBCU Athletic Conference game inside Ashby Auditorium.

The Ambassadors led 37-26 at intermission, but the Bulldogs opened the third quarter with a 14-4 run to pull within 41-40 on a 3-pointer by Makyla Tucker at the 5:20 mark.

Oakwood closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to go back up 49-40 entering the fourth quarter.

Wilberforce pulled within one on two occasions down the stretch, the last time with 2:03 remaining on a jumper by Dreann Pryce that made it 61-60, but Madison McDonald scored to give Oakwood a 63-60 lead with 83 seconds left and the Ambassadors held on for the victory.

Oakwood improved to 8-9 overall and 6-6 in league play with the win. Wilberforce fell to 7-11 and 4-8.

Trenisha Adams led the Ambassadors with 20 points on 7-of-16 shooting, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range. She also had five rebounds, four assists and two steals while playing 40 minutes.

Saniya Keys finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and two assists.

Oakwood shot 32.9 percent (23-of-70) from the field, including 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from 3-point range, and 45.5 percent (10-of-22) from the free throw line.

Laniya Early led three Bulldogs in double figures with 15 points.

Tucker finished with 14, while Jada Hairston had 10 points and 15 rebounds.

Wilberforce shot 30.1 percent (22-of-73) from the field, including 26.7 percent (8-of-30) 
from beyond the arc, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood is back in action Monday at Blue Mountain College.
