HOME RUN BARRAGE HELPS OAKWOOD SNAP 47-GAME LOSING STREAK

 LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Six different players combined to hit nine home runs Sunday as Oakwood University snapped a 47-game losing streak dating back to last season as the Ambassadors swept a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader from Philander Smith, beating the Panthers 15-11 and 15-14 at Lamar Porter Field.
 
The wins, Oakwood's first since reviving the program last season, lifted the Ambassadors to 2-20 overall and 2-6 in league play.
 
Jeremy Matos went 6-for-11, including two home runs and a double, scored six runs and had five RBI.
 
Jaylen Fairris went 3-for-7 with a homer, five RBI and scored two runs.
 
Mateo Hamm went 3-for-8 with a homer, scored four runs and had four RBI.
 
Jayden Rolling went 3-for-7 and scored four runs.
 
Chris Aguilar went 3-for-6 with a homer, two RBI and scored three runs.
 
Dylan Grigorius went 3-for-6 with three homers, scored three runs and had five RBI.
 
Jordan Jennings went 2-for-7 with a homer, scored two runs and have four RBI.
 
Game 1
 
Grigorius and Matos hit 2-run homers in the second inning and Hamm added a solo shot to stake Oakwood to an early 5-1 lead in the opener.
 
Grigorius added another 2-run shot in the second and Jennings added a solo shot in the fourth and Fairris belted a 3-run shot to make it 11-1.
 
Aguilar's 2-run homer, part of a four-run fifth inning, gave the Ambassadors a commanding 15-1 lead.
 
The Panthers made a game of it, scoring two in the fifth and eight in the seventh, before Oakwood was able to get the final out to seal its first win of the season.
 
Hamm (1-3) picked up the win, allowing eight runs on 11 hits in 6.1 innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.
 
Game 2
 
Matos opened the game with a solo shot to give Oakwood an early 1-0 lead.
 
Grigorius added a solo homer in the third, part of a four-run inning, to give the Ambassadors a 12-6 advantage.
 
Philander Smith scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth and another one in the bottom of the fifth to up 14-12, but Oakwood rallied to score two runs in the sixth to tie the game and pushed across the winning run in the top of eighth.
 
Anthony Brent Jr. (1-0) got the win, allowing no runs on one hit in three innings of work.
 
He walked two and struck out two. Brent relieved Jorge Hernandez with no outs and a runner on first base in the bottom of the fifth inning and blanked the Panthers over the next three innings.
 
Tedrus Hamilton got the save after relieving Brent Jr with runners on first and second and no outs in the bottom of the eighth. He retired the next three batters to get the save.
 
Hamilton allowed no runs on no hits, and struck out one in one inning of work.
