HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. –
Mateo Hamm had three hits and
Jeremy Matos and
Jayden Rolling had two apiece, but Oakwood University fell to Rust College 5-4 and 18-2 Sunday in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Ambassadors fell to 0-13 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Bearcats improved to 7-16 and 4-2.
Game 1
Oakwood jumped out to a 4-1 lead midway through the fourth inning, but Rust rallied with a run in the bottom of the inning, a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to come away with the 5-4 victory.
Hamm was 2-for-4 and scored a run, while Matos, Rolling and
Chris Aguilar each had a hit and scored a run. Aguilar,
Jaylen Fairris and
Ahmad Woods each had an RBI, while
Tedrus Hamilton also scored a run.
Hamm (0-2) took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out six.
Game 2
The Bearcats erupted for nine runs in the first inning and the Ambassadors never recovered in the nightcap.
Oakwood pushed across single runs in the third and fifth innings to avoid the shutout.
Matos, Hamm, Rolling, Fairris and
Jordan Jennings each had a hit. Jennings and Aguilar had RBIs, while Rolling and
Dakota Cobb scored a run apiece.
Akari David (0-3) took the loss, allowing seven runs on four hits in 0.2 innings of work.
