WILLIAMS' BIG NIGHT NOT ENOUGH FOR OAKWOOD

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Nekaya Williams scored a career-high 29 points, but it wasn't enough as Oakwood University came up short in a 67-55 loss to Fisk University in an important Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium.

Williams was sensational against the Bulldogs.

A sophomore from Atlanta, Williams was 10-of-16 from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and made all four of her free throws. She also grabbed four rebounds, had three assists and two steals on the night.

"Nekaya played like an All-GCAC caliber player," Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams said.

"We need her to play at that level every game."

Oakwood led 30-29 at intermission, but Fisk outscored the Ambassadors 19-9 in the third quarter to go up 48-39 going into the fourth quarter. The Ambassadors pulled within seven points on two occasions in the fourth quarter, the last time at 51-44 with 7:33 remaining on a layup by Williams, but they couldn't get any closer.

The loss dropped Oakwood to 6-13 overall and 4-7 in league play. Fisk improved to 13-7 and 10-2.

Oakwood shot 39.6 percent (21-of-53) from the field, including 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from beyond the arc, and 66.7 percent (6-of-9) from the free throw line.

Jayla Bibbs led three Fisk players in double figures with 18 points. Maya Buckhanon finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Zipporah Davis added 13 points.

The Bulldogs shot 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range, and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the charity stripe.

Fisk scored 36 points in the paint, 24 points off turnovers, had 18 second-chance points and 28 bench points.

Oakwood hosts Stillman College Monday at 5:30 p.m.
