ADAMS COMES ALIVE TO HELP OAKWOOD THROTTLE UVI

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Trenisha Adams hadn't been herself of late.

A preseason All-Gulf Coast Athletic Conference preseason pick, Adams had struggled mightily over the last three games. Oakwood University's second-leading scorer, she had averaged just six points per game while shooting 17.2 percent from the field, including 13.6 percent from 3-point range.

After Saturday night, Adams hopes her struggles are over.

A sophomore from Rome, Ga., Adams scored a career-high 29 points in just 26 minutes as Oakwood whipped the University of the Virgin Islands 73-58 in an important GCAC game at Ashby Auditorium.

Adams was 10-of-17 from the field, including 8-of-13 from 3-point range, and made her lone free throw. She also grabbed six rebounds and had two assists and two steals to help the Ambassadors snap their three-game losing streak.

Oakwood improved to 7-15 overall and 5-8 in league play with the win. UVI fell to 1-16 and 1-12.

Nekaya Williams, who missed Tuesday's game at Talladega College with an ankle injury, returned and finished with 15 points. She was 5-of-10 from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and made both of her free throw attempts. Williams also had two rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block in 24 minutes.

Denaj'za Jackson finished with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, and 1-of-2 from the charity stripe. She also had four rebounds and three assists.

Nariah Alexander chipped in 12 points, including two 3-pointers, two rebounds, one assist and three steals.

Oakwood shot 40.9 percent (27-of-66) from the field, including 53.6 percent (15-of-28) from 3-point range, and 80 percent (4-of-5) from the free throw line.

Brea Patterson led three UVI players in double figures with 18 points. Ashukamayah Phillips and Mia Davis finished with 13 and 11 points, respectively.

Oakwood visits Rust College Monday in a GCAC game. Tipoff is 5:30.
