SECOND HALF DOOMS OAKWOOD IN LOSS TO RUST COLLEGE

Box Score HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – Oakwood University was poised to get its first HBCU Athletic Conference win of the season Tuesday night.

The Ambassadors put together one of their best halves of the season and went into the locker room with a 37-31 advantage over Rust College. Coach Simon Jacob's team was 20 minutes away from snapping its six-game losing streak.

Then, the second half came.

Oakwood's defense sprung a leak and instead of winning, the Ambassadors ended up losing.

The Bearcats scored 49 points in the second half and went on to hand Oakwood its seventh straight loss, beating the Ambassadors 80-74.

"We've had trouble putting two halves together," Jacob said. "It wasn't that we played bad. Rust just played better."

The Bearcats shot a sizzling 68 percent from the field in the second half, connecting on 17-of-25 shots.

Oakwood fell to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in league play with the loss. Rust improved to 2-6 and 1-3.

Jordan Bell led the Ambassadors with 21 points and five rebounds. He was 9-of-16 from the field.

Jamarkus Alexander finished with 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting, including three 3-pointers.

Oakwood shot 47.5 percent (29-of-61) from the field, including 26.9 percent (7-of-26) from 3-point range, and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free throw line.

Jordin Jackson led four Rust players in double figures with 22 points. Isiah McCallum finished with 16 points, while Jordan Fordyuce and Marcus Wilson scored 14 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bearcats shot 58.7 percent (27-of-46) from the field, including 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from beyond the arc, and 71 percent (22-of-31) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood is back in action Friday at Dillard in the HBCUAC Crossover. Tipoff is 3 p.m.
