STILLMAN HANDS OAKWOOD 4TH STRAIGHT LOSS AFTER AMBASSADORS FAIL TO CLOSE GAME

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Naftal Morara's layup with just under 10 minutes remaining Thursday night gave Oakwood University a 50-43 advantage over Stillman College in an important HBCU Athletic Conference game.

The Ambassadors, who trailed 39-32 early in the second half, had battled back to take the lead and were in the middle of one of their better stretches of the season. They seemed poised to snap their three-game losing streak.

Even after Stillman rallied to get back in the game, Amonte Harmon's jumper at the 5:24 mark gave Oakwood a 53-50 lead. It was 55-52 after Jaywill Thornton scored inside with just under four minutes to play.

Unfortunately, Simon Jacob's team couldn't seal the deal.

Oakwood failed to score the rest of the way as Stillman came from behind to claim a 59-55 victory inside Ashby Auditorium.

"We've got to learn how to close games," Jacob said. "We don't have that guy that we can go to down the stretch when we need a basket."

The Ambassadors missed their last four shots and committed three turnovers down the stretch.

All total, after Morara's layup gave Oakwood a 50-43 lead at the 9:33 mark, the Ambassadors were outscored 16-5 the rest of the way.

Oakwood fell to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in league play with its fourth straight loss. Stillman extended its winning streak to four straight games and improved to 4-4 and 3-0.

Jordan Bell led Oakwood with 17 points and six rebounds. He also had two assists, two steals and two blocks.

Brian Williams finished with nine points, four rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Nobody else had more than five points.

The Ambassadors shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, including 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range, and 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from the free throw line.

Joshua Price, who played locally at Sparkman High School, led Stillman with 16 points. Michael Taylor finished with 14 points, while Jeremiah Miller added 11. Calvin Finch Jr had 12 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks.

The Tigers shot 37.5 percent (21-of-56) from the field, including 21.7 percent (5-of-23) from beyond the arc, and 50 percent (12-of-24) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood visits Faulkner University Saturday night at 8.
