POOR SECOND HALF, 3-POINT SHOOTING DOOM OAKWOOD IN HBCUAC OPENER

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University was feeling pretty good midway through its HBCU Athletic Conference opener Thursday night.

The Ambassadors went to the locker room down 39-36 at intermission to Fisk University.

Unfortunately, they couldn't duplicate the same brand of basketball in the final 20 minutes.

The Bulldogs outscored Oakwood 41-27 in the second half to turn a close game into a blowout and went on to beat the Ambassadors 80-63 inside Ashby Auditorium.

"We've had trouble putting two good halves together," said Oakwood coach Simon Jacob after watching his team fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. "We played really well the first half, but struggled in the second half.

"We've got to find a way to play 40 minutes of quality basketball. That's the challenge for us as coaches and players."

The Ambassadors don't have much time to figure it out.

Oakwood visits Rust College Saturday afternoon in hopes of snapping a three-game losing streak.

The difference in Thursday's game was 3-point shooting.

Fisk was 13-of-27 from beyond the arc, while Oakwood was only 5-of-22.

"We had a hard time defending the 3-point shot," Jacob said.

Lucious McNelkan led the Bulldogs with 29 points, including nine of their 13 3-pointers. He was 10-of-17 from the field, including 9-of-14 from deep.

Doyel Cockrill finished with 21 points. Mark Cooper had eight points, eight rebounds and 11 assists, while Michael Ashley had five points, 18 rebounds, five assists and three blocks.

Fisk shot 41.7 percent (25-of-60) from the field, including 48.1 percent (13-of-27) from 3-point range, and 65.4 percent (17-of-26) from the free throw line.

Jordan Bell led Oakwood with 16 points. He also had six rebounds and four blocks.

Nicholas Kennard finished with 11 points.

The Ambassadors shot 39.3 percent (24-of-61) from the field, including 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.
