OAKWOOD SEEKING SECOND STRAIGHT ROAD WIN AS IT VISITS FISK TODAY

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Fresh off of its first road win of the season, the Oakwood University women's basketball team will try to make it two in a row when it visits Fisk University today in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game.

Oakwood enters the game 4-9 overall and 2-3 in league play. Fisk is 8-6 and 5-1, currently tied for first place along with Rust College. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. inside Henderson A. Johnson Arena.

The Ambassadors whipped the University of the Virgin Islands 61-37 Saturday night, but Oakwood head coach Ronnie Abrams knows the Bulldogs, who are 5-1 in their last six games after a 3-5 start, will present a much different challenge.

"Fisk is playing as well as anybody in our league," Abrams said. "And, they have arguably the best player in our league in Maya Buckhanon. If we don't find a way to slow her down, it could be a long afternoon."

Buckhanon, the Bulldogs' senior forward, has dominated opposing teams. She is averaging 24.1 points and 15.8 rebounds per game. Buckhanon is shooting almost 53 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free throw line.

Zipporah Davis complements Buckhanon, averaging 11.4 points per game.

Oakwood will counter with Nekaya Williams and Trenisha Adams, a pair of preseason first-team All-GCAC selections.

Williams leads the Ambassadors in scoring (12.5) and rebounding (6.8), while Adams is second at 11.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game.
