IMPROVE SEEDING IS THE GOAL FOR OAKWOOD AT GCAC ROUND UP


Oakwood University's women's basketball team  will try to improve its position for the upcoming Gulf Coast Athletic Conference tournament today  when it takes on Tougaloo College in the GCAC Round Up at Wiley College. Tipoff is set for noon at Alumni Gymnasium in Marshall, Texas.

The Ambassadors and the Bulldogs are tied for seventh in the league standings with 3-7 records. They are one game back of Wiley College and two games back of
Dillard University with four games to play.

Tougaloo (4-14) downed Oakwood (5-17) 80-67 on Jan. 24 at the GCAC Round Up at Oakwood.

Keiah Dancy's (Detroit, MI) layup with just under five minutes left gave the Ambassadors a 63-61 lead, but Oakwood managed just four points the rest of the way in the loss. Dancy led the way with 20 points. Denaj'za Jackson (Detroit, MI) had 14, while Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) and Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA) finished with 13 and 11, respectively.

Williams is averaging 13.2 points per game to lead Oakwood. Adams is pouring in 9.9 points per game. Hannah Cohn (Decatur, AL) and Jackson have been big contributors as well.

Oakwood will take on Wiley College (13-4, 4-6) Saturday night at 6:30. Wiley downed Oakwood 89-69 on Jan. 13 at the GCAC Round Up at Dillard University in New Orleans.

The Wildcats led 19-11 after the first quarter in the first meeting, but outscored the Ambassadors 30-11 in the second quarter and won going away.

Guard Kaitlyn Davis is averaging a team-high 12.1 points per game to lead Wiley. Diamond Hawthorne is averaging 10.6 points and 6.6 rebounds.

Oakwood will round out the three-day event Sunday when it takes on Southern University at New Orleans (2-14, 0-9) at noon.

The Ambassadors downed the Knights 81-69 on Feb. 5 in the GCAC Round Up at Rust College. Adams led the way with 24 points, including eight 3-pointers. Cohn had 17, while Williams and Jackson finished with 15 and 11, respectively.

Guard Quiana Vasquez is averaging a team-high 15.9 points per game to lead SUNO. Ananya Donaldson is averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game.
