PHILANDER SMITH HANDLES OAKWOOD AT HOME

Oakwood University had hoped to make a statement Thursday night with Philander Smith, one of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference preseason favorites, in town.

The Ambassadors did just that, jumping out to a 5-0 advantage as Brittany Lawless-Sherill brought the crowd to its feet with a 3-pointer to open the game. Unfortunately, that lead had evaporated by the end of the first quarter and the Panthers continued to pull away throughout the game.

When it was over, Philander Smith handed Oakwood its first home loss of the season, beating the Ambassadors 64-46 at Ashby Auditorium.

The loss dropped Oakwood to 3-8 overall and 1-2 in league play. Philander Smith improved to 9-3 and 2-1.

Lawless-Sherill (Goodlettsville, TN) led the Ambassadors with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range. Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA) finished with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Nekaya Williams (Atlanta, GA) also had nine points.

Oakwood shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from 3-point range, and 56.3 percent (9-of-16) from the free throw line. The Ambassadors hurt themselves with 21 turnovers and the Panthers scored 20 points off those turnovers. Oakwood also managed just eight points off the bench.

Meleanne Williams and Elaijha Brown led Philander Smith with 12 points each. Ari Winston scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Panthers shot 43.3 percent (26-of-60) from the field, including 24.1 percent (7-of-29) from deep, and 83.3 percent (5-of-6) from the charity stripe. Philander Smith also got 22 points off the bench.

Oakwood will host Wiley College Saturday night at 6.
