OAKWOOD HOSTS PHILANDER SMITH, WILEY COLLEGE IN IMPORTANT TWO-GAME HOMESTAND

Oakwood University has had a difficult time winning games away from home.

The Ambassadors are 0-5 on the road, but are 2-0 at Ashby Auditorium. Because of that, head coach Ronnie Abrams says the next two games are extremely important in Oakwood's quest to become a factor in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

"Our goal is to win a championship," Abrams said. "In order to do that, we've got to protect our home court."

Oakwood (3-7, 1-1) hosts Philander Smith (8-3, 1-1) today at 5 p.m. in a GCAC contest. The Panthers were picked to finish second in the GCAC preseason poll, while the Ambassadors were picked to finish eighth.

Abrams' team is coming off of an embarrassing 72-43 loss Tuesday night at Stillman College. He advised his team to forget about that game and quickly focus on Philander Smith, who is led by GCAC preseason Player of the Year Myia Yelder, Dasia Turner and Kimberlynn Washington.

"Those are their big three," Abrams said. "Yelder does a little bit of everything for them. Turner and Washington are their two leading scorers. We've got to contain them if we're going to have a chance to win."

Turner is averaging 11 points and 7.7 rebounds per game, while Washington is averaging 10.3 points per game. PSU started the season 5-0, but is just 3-3 in its last six games.

Oakwood will counter with Nekaya Williams and Trenisha Adams, who were on the All-GCAC preseason first team.
Williams is averaging 13 points and 6.6 rebounds, while Adams is averaging 11.8 points and 3.4 rebounds.

After tonight's game, Oakwood hosts Wiley College Saturday.
