OAKWOOD'S SHOOTING WOES CONTINUE IN LOPSIDED LOSS TO NO. 8 FREED-HARDEMAN

Oakwood University has struggled shooting the basketball through the early portion of the season.

Entering Tuesday night's game against No. 8 Freed-Hardeman, the Ambassadors were shooting just 36.4 percent from the field. That number was even lower against the Lions.

Oakwood shot just 25.4 percent from the field, making just 15-of-59 shots, as Freed-Hardeman led from start to finish enroute to an easy 77-45 victory at Ashby Auditorium. The 45 points were a season low.

The Ambassadors' starters were 5-of-26 from the field and combined for just 11 points. Oakwood got some help from its bench as Felix Mcghee (Montgomery, AL), JB Moore (Columbia, SC), Alvin Mokum (Brooklyn Park, MN) and Naftal Morara (Farmington, MN) combined for 31 points.

Mcghee finished with a team-high nine points on 3-of-7 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Moore scored eight points, while Mokum and Morara finished with seven apiece.

"Those four guys gave us a spark and helped us be more competitive in the second half," Oakwood head coach Simon Jacob said.

After trailing 36-11 at halftime, Oakwood was only outscored 41-34 in the second half.

The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 0-5 on the season. Meanwhile, the Lions improved to 4-0.

Oakwood shot 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range and 57.1 percent (8-of-14) from the free throw line. The Ambassadors hurt themselves with 20 turnovers.

Freed-Hardeman had five players in double figures, led by JJ Wheat, who finished with 16. Geraldo Lane, a former Columbia High School standout, scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds. He was 6-of-8 from the field, made all four of his free throws and had four steals.

The Lions shot 50.8 percent (33-of-65) from the field, including 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line.
