NASHVILLE – Oakwood University's women's basketball team will visit Fisk University today in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Henderson A. Johnson Gymnasium.
The Lady Ambassadors enter today's game 2-10 overall and riding a two-game losing streak. Oakwood's last win was a 72-52 blowout of Vorhees College back on Nov. 22.
Fisk is 5-4 overall and snapped a three-game losing streak with a 90-86 road win over Indiana University Southeast on Dec. 13.
Oakwood is led by a trio of guards –
Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA),
Denaj'za Jackson (Detroit, MI) and
Trenisha Adams (Rome, GA).
Williams is averaging a team-high 15.2 points per game, while Jackson and Adams are contributing 9.5 and 9.2 points, respectively.
Fisk is led by 6-foot-3 senior center Maya Buckhanon, who is from Talladega.
Buckhanon is averaging 20.3 points and 14.1 rebounds per game on 60 percent shooting. She had 45 points on 18-of-22 shooting and 19 rebounds in the win over Indiana University Southeast.
According to Oakwood coach Aleshia Greene, containing Buckhanon will be a huge priority for the Lady Ambassadors.
"Because we're an undersized team, our task of containing bigger post players throughout the conference will be a big focus for us and it starts today against Maya," Greene said.
