Box Score A day after falling to Freed-Hardeman in the FHU Classic, Oakwood University appeared poised to pick up its first win of the season Friday afternoon at the Brewer Sports Center in Henderson, Tenn.
The Lady Ambassadors, clinging to a slight lead over Stephens College with just under eight minutes remaining, couldn't hold on.
The Stars outscored Oakwood 27-17 the rest of the way to come away with a 90-82 victory, spoiling the Lady Ambassadors' best effort of the season.
"We were right there, but we didn't finish," said Oakwood coach Aleshia Greene, who watched her team fall to 0-4 on the season. "We're coming, but we've got to learn how to finish games."
The Lady Ambassadors trailed 63-52 late in the third quarter, but used a 13-0 run to go up 65-63 with 7:52 to play. However, Stephens responded with a run of its own, outscoring Oakwood 10-2 over the next three minutes to go up 73-67 and Oakwood never got closer than three points the rest of the way.
Nekaya Williams led Oakwood with 25 points. She was 7-of-15 from the field, 3-of-7 from 3-point range and 8-of-11 from the free throw line.
Jayda Caldwell finished with 14 points, while Hannah Cohn and Keiah Dancy and 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Lady Ambassadors shot 49 percent (27-of-55) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from 3-point range and 80.8 percent (21-of-26) from the charity stripe. Unfortunately, Oakwood turned the ball over 29 times that led to 32 points for Stephens College.
Zaraya March led four Stars in double figures with 21 points.
