OAKWOOD SOFTBALL STANDOUTS HOWARD, NEWBY HONORED BY HBCUAC

NEW ORLEANS – Oakwood University's Jordan Howard and Emma Newby were named the HBCU Athletic Conference's Softball Player of the Week and Pitcher and Freshman of the Week, league officials announced Monday.
 
Howard, a sophomore shortstop from Chelsea, batted .667, including a double and a triple, scored four runs and had three RBI to help the Ambassadors sweep Lane College last week.
 
The reigning HBCUAC Freshman of the Year, Howard's best outing came in the second game when she went 3-for-4 with a double, scored three runs and had two RBI.
 
Newby. a freshman from Huntsville, was terrific in the circle in picking up both wins.
 
She allowed 10 runs, eight earned, on 17 hits in 13.2 innings of work, while walking six and striking out 20.
 
Newby's best outing came in the opener when she gave up no runs on four hits in 6.2 innings to go along with three walks and 10 strikeouts.
 
Offensively, Newby went 2-for-3 and scored three runs.
