SENIOR DAY --OAKWOOD WILL HONOR ARNETT, MORROW, JOHNSON AND HALLMAN TODAY IN FINAL HOME GAME

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – When Oakwood University moved its athletics program to NAIA three years ago and restarted its softball program after a long hiatus, head coach Bob Harris went out looking for proven winners.

That first year, Harris found Sydney Arnett, who would go on and anchor the Ambassadors' pitching staff, and catcher Jana Morrow, Arnett's battery mate.

Arnett, an Andalusia native, came from Chattahoochie Community College, while Morrow, who is from Moody, came from Bevill State.

Last year, Harris brought in outfielder Katie Johnson and Ashlyn Hallman, a second baseman/pitcher. Both came from Snead State Community College.

While Oakwood's record hasn't been great since the program was revived, Harris believes the program has a bright future because of those four players.

"They laid the foundation for us," Harris said. "They bought in and came here to help us build our program and Oakwood softball will be better in the future because of them."

Harris and company will honor Arnett, Morrow, Johnson and Hall today on Senior Day when Faulkner University comes to town for a doubleheader at University Field. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.

Arnett is 6-11 on the season with a 4.79 ERA. She leads the HBCU Athletic Conference with 114 strikeouts, averaging a league-high 8.33 per game. Offensively, she is hitting .280 with 15 hits on the season.

Johnson is hitting .272 with nine RBI. She has a team-high nine stolen bases.

Hallman and Morrow have struggled offensively, but have provided tremendous leadership, Harris said.

"They have stayed engaged despite not putting up the numbers they have provided in the past," Harris said. "They have continued to encourage their teammates."

Oakwood, 7-26 overall, will try to snap a seven-game losing streak today against Faulkner.

"We've had a disappointing season, but we've got some talented players," Harris said.  "We just haven's been able to put it all together. If we can find a way to win today and build some momentum for the tournament, I think we can make a run."

Oakwood will participate in the HBCUAC Championship starting Wednesday at the Wilson-Morgan Complex In Decatur.
