CUMBERLAND TOO MUCH FOR BELL, OAKWOOD IN SEASON OPENER

LEBANON, Tenn. – Jordan Bell scored 21 points, but it wasn't enough as Oakwood University fell 88-69 to Cumberland University Thursday night in the season opener for both teams inside Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
 
The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 0-1 on the season, while the Phoenix moved to 1-0.
 
Oakwood trailed 55-34 at intermission and never threatened the rest of the way.
 
Bell was 9-of-18 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds, had four steals and two blocks.
 
Newcomer Joshua Barnett finished with 13 points, had three rebounds, two assists and one steal.
 
Damon Fann scored 12 points, including Oakwood's only 3-pointers on the night, and had three rebounds.
 
Jordan Hill had 10 points, four rebounds, one steal and one block.
 
The Ambassadors shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the field, including 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from 3-point range, and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line.
 
Jake Hatch led five Cumberland players in double figures with 19 points, including five 3-pointers.
 
Triston Conger finished with 14 points, while Nick Brunetti and Riggs Abner scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. Abner posted a double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds to go with his 12 points.
 
The Phoenix shot 46.7 percent (35-of-75) from the field, including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from beyond the arc, and 83.3 percent (10-of-12) from the charity stripe.
 
Oakwood will host Freed-Hardeman Saturday in its home opener inside Ashby Auditorium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
