OAKWOOD HOSTS TALLADEGA COLLEGE TONIGHT IN IMPORTANT HBCUAC DOUBLEHEADER

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University will host Talladega College tonight in an important HBCU Athletic Conference doubleheader inside Ashby Auditorium.

The women's game begins at 6:30, followed by the men's game.

Men's Preview

The Ambassadors enter tonight's game 2-19 overall and 1-12 in league play, but Oakwood coach Simon Jacob says his team believes it can do some damage in the upcoming HBCUAC Championship if it can string together some wins.

Six of Oakwood's 12 conference losses have been by six points or less, including three by two points or less.

The Ambassadors' last loss, a 75-73 setback at Wilberforce University Thursday night, would have ended differently had Damon Fann's 3-pointer not rimmed out as time expired.

Even so, Oakwood must turn the page and get ready for a hot Talladega College team tonight.

The Tornadoes (15-7, 9-5) are currently in second place in the East Division and are riding a seven-game winning streak. Talladega College hasn't lost since falling at home to Wiley College on Jan. 3.

"They're one of the hottest teams in the league," said Jacob, whose team is in last place in the East Division. "They're playing extremely well. As disappointing as Thursday night's loss was, we've got to be ready to meet the challenge."

Five of Oakwood's last seven games are HBCUAC contests.

Forward Jordan Bell and guard Jamarkus Alexander have been strong for the Ambassadors this season.

Bell is averaging a team-high 16 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He also has a team-high 26 blocks.

Alexander is averaging 12.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. Jordan Green, who joined the team in late December, has been a solid contributor. In fact, Green, a sophomore forward from Columbus, OH., had a monster game Thursday against Wilberforce, finishing with 28 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.

Talladega College will counter with forward Shaun Walker, guard Corey Sands and forward Lamont Sams.

Walker is averaging 13.2 points and seven rebounds per game, while Sands is pouring in 13.1 points and 3.3 rebounds. Sams is averaging 11 points and 5.9 rebounds.

Women's Preview

Oakwood enters tonight's game one game back in the win column behind Talladega College for third place in the East Division.

The Ambassadors are 8-11 overall and 6-7 in league play, while the Tornadoes are 7-10 and 7-7.

Since winning five straight games, Oakwood has lost its last two, including a 77-72 loss at Wilberforce University Thursday night. Tonight's contest is the first of five straight HBCUAC games for the Ambassadors to close out the season.

"This is a big game for us," Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams said. "We need to win to build some momentum as we go down the stretch and get ready for the tournament."

Saniya Keys and Trenisha Adams have been the Ambassadors' top players this season.

Keys leads the league in scoring (18.1) and rebounding (11.5), while shooting 52 percent from the field. She also has 16 blocks.

Adams is averaging 12.2 points and 3.8 rebounds. She has a team-high 61 3-pointers, 71 assists and 39 steals.

Talladega College will counter with guard DeJaria Lewis and forward Kameron Jones.

Lewis is averaging 10.8 points and 9.5 rebounds, while Jones is averaging 10.7 points and 4.6 rebounds.
