OAKWOOD HOSTS WILBERFORCE IN A CRITICAL HBCUAC DOUBLEHEADER TODAY

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Oakwood University will host Wilberforce University today in a critical HBCU Athletic Conference doubleheader inside Ashby Auditorium.

Tipoff for the women's game is 5:30 p.m., followed by the men's game.

Men's Preview

The Ambassadors, 1-18 overall and 0-11 in league play, will be trying to snap their 16-game losing streak when the Bulldogs come calling.

Simon Jacob's team, despite being in last place in the East Division, has played better of late. Even so, the Ambassadors haven't been able to get over the hump.

Oakwood has lost three of its last four conference games by a combined seven points, falling to the University of the Virgin Islands 75-73, Fisk University 83-79 and Rust College 70-69.

"We've been right there," Jacob said. "We just haven't been able to close. Hopefully, we can do it tonight."

Wilberforce, currently in third place, enter the game 7-10 and 5-6. The Bulldogs are in the middle of a seven-game losing streak. Wilberforce's last win was a 63-59 victory over Wiley College in the HBCUAC Crossover on Dec. 13.

Oakwood has been led by forward Jordan Bell and guard Jamarkus Alexander this season.

Bell is averaging 15.2 points and 6.5 rebounds and has a team-high 24 blocks. Alexander is averaging 12.4 points per game.

Wilberforce will counter with guard Cali Davis and forward Kyle Cardenas.

Davis leads the team in scoring (19.3), rebounding (5.0) and assists (3.3), while Cardenas is averaging 12.7 points per game.

Davis had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists in Wilberforce's last win over Wiley College.

Women's Preview

Oakwood will try to extend its winning streak to five straight games today against Wilberforce.

The Ambassadors, currently in fourth place, are 7-9 overall and 5-6 in league play, while the Bulldogs, in last place, come in 7-10 and 4-7.

Oakwood is led by reigning HBCUAC Freshman of the Week, Saniya Keys, who leads the league in scoring (18.4) and rebounding (11.4).

Keys, Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams says, is part of a three-headed monster for the Ambassadors.

Trenisha Adams and Kamaria Murray are the other two.

Adams is averaging 11.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. She leads the team with 49 3-pointers, 61 assists and 36 steals.

Murray is averaging 10.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. She has 29 3-pointers, 44 assists, 29 steals and is shooting a team-high 83 percent from the free throw line.

The Ambassadors are averaging almost 76 points per game during their four-game winning streak.

The Bulldogs, winners of two in a row, are led by Makyla Tucker and Constance Chaplin.

Tucker is averaging 14.2 points and 3.7 rebounds, while Chaplin is averaging 13.8 points and 6.4 rebounds.
