RUST COLLEGE COMES FROM BEHIND TO BEAT OAKWOOD

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Damon Fann and Jamarkus Alexander finished in double figures, but Oakwood University couldn't hold on down the stretch as Rust College handed the Ambassadors their 15th straight loss Thursday night with a 70-69 victory inside Ashby Auditorium in HBCU Athletic Conference action.

The loss dropped Oakwood to 1-17 overall and 0-11 in league play. Rust improved to 4-12 and 3-9.

Oakwood raced out to a 14-2 lead four minutes into the game and led 32-17 with just over seven minutes left in the first half, before Rust closed the half with a 15-0 run to tie the game at 32-all at intermission.

Fann's 3-pointer gave the Ambassadors a 54-48 advantage with just under eight minutes remaining and Jaywill Thornton hit two free throws to give Oakwood its largest lead of the half at 58-50 at the 7:22 mark.

The Bearcats used a 20-9 run over the next six-plus minutes to take a 70-67 advantage and Oakwood couldn't recover.

Jordan Green's two free throws with 45 seconds left pulled the Ambassadors within 70-69, but Chase Jackson missed a layup with five seconds left that likely could have won it for Oakwood and Rust hung on for the victory to sweep the season series.

Fann finished with 15 points, while Alexander finished with 13.

Oakwood shot 39.3 percent (22-of-56) from the field, including 32 percent (8-of-25) from 3-point range, and 68 percent (17-of-25) from the free throw line.

Jayden Stephens and Justin Hicks led the Bearcats wit 15 points each. Jordin Jackson finished with 12.

Rust shot 50 percent (28-of-56) from the field, including 40 percent (6-of-15) from beyond the arc, and 47.1 percent (8-of-17) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood hosts Tennessee Southern Saturday night at 7.
