OAKWOOD COMES UP SHORT DESPITE ALEXANDER'S HOT SHOOTING

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Jamarkus Alexander made nine shots, including six 3-pointers, Thursday night against Fisk University.

Unfortunately, he missed his last one and Oakwood University was unable to snap its 13-game losing streak.

Alexander's jumper with two seconds left rimmed out and Doyel Cockrill III hit two free throws with one second remaining as the Bulldogs outlasted the Ambassadors 83-79 in an important HBCU Athletic Conference game inside Henderson A. Johnson Arena.

Oakwood fell to 1-16 overall and 1-10 in league play with the loss. Fisk improved to 7-14 and 5-7.

The Ambassadors trailed 59-50 with just under 14 minutes left before battling back.

Alexander's 3-pointer with just over 11 minutes left capped a 9-3 run and pulled Oakwood within 62-59.

Oakwood pulled within two points on six different occasions down the stretch, the last time with 43 seconds left on a pair of free throws by Jordan Bell that made it 81-79.

After getting a stop on defense, Alexander's jumper refused to fall with two seconds left and Fisk escaped with the victory after Cockrill's free throws to sweep the season series.

Alexander led the way for the Ambassadors with 24 points on 9-of-16 shooting, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range. He also had eight rebounds, four assists and a block.

Bell finished with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and two blocks, while Damon Fann had 12 points, nine rebounds, four assists and a steal.

Oakwood shot 48.6 percent (34-of-70) from the field, including 36.8 percent (7-of-19) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (4-of-8) from the free throw line.

Michael Ashley led six Fisk players in double figures with 22 points and 13 rebounds.

Kailon Benton-Hamilton finished with 13, while Lucious Jackson and Cockrill III had 12 and 11, respectively. Carrington Allen and Mitch Seay scored 10 apiece.

The Bulldogs shot 42.3 percent (33-of-78) from the field, including 36.7 percent (11-of-30) from beyond the arc, and 50 percent (6-of-12) from the charity stripe.
