LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - The addition of three new members will allow the HBCU Athletic Conference to move to divisional play in men's and women's basketball and volleyball starting with the 2024-2025 season, commissioner Kiki Barnes said recently during the league meetings at Philander Smith College.

Wilberforce University, Stillman College and Voorhees University gives the league 13 members and as a result will allow the conference to move to an East/West Division format.

The East Division will consist of Fisk University, Oakwood University, Rust College, Stillman College, Talladega College, Voorhees University and Wilberforce University.

The West Division will consist of Dillard University, Philander Smith University, Southern University New Orleans, Tougaloo College, University of Virgin Islands and Wiley University.

Division opponents will play each other twice, while non-division teams will play each other once in pod play.

The University of Virgin Islands and Voorhees doesn't field volleyball teams.

The additional teams also give the HBCUAC two automatic bids to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics national championship in volleyball, men's and women's basketball and baseball.

Softball
As with basketball and volleyball, the addition of Stillman College and Voorhees University will allow the league to sponsor softball as a championship sport.

Six schools – Dillard, Oakwood, Rust, Stillman, Talladega College and Voorhees – will vye to become the league's first-ever softball champion.

Each team will likely play a 30-game league schedule with each team playing a 3-game series both at home and on the road.

The conference tournament champion will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA national championship.

With addition of softball as a championship sport, the league will now crown champions in volleyball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's track, baseball and softball.
