OAKWOOD'S RECORD-BREAKING SEASON COMES TO AN END IN LOSS TO DILLARD

TUSCALOOSA – Oakwood University was a quarter away from picking up its first-ever postseason victory Friday afternoon.

The Ambassadors were clinging to a 59-58 lead over Dillard University heading into the fourth quarter in the quarterfinals of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference 2024 Hope Credit Union Women's Championship inside Birthright Alumni Hall.

Unfortunately, things unraveled in the last 10 minutes.

Oakwood shot just 21 percent (4-of-19) in the fourth quarter, including 16.6 percent (2-of-12) from 3-point range, as the Bleu Devils outscored the Ambassadors 22-13 enroute to an 80-72 victory.

Oakwood finished its record-breaking season with a 10-19 record. The 10 wins are the most in school history. Dillard improved to 13-14 and will play Philander Smith Saturday in the semifinals.

"We didn't finish the game, but I'm proud of my team," Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams said. "We were in the game, but we let it get away from us in the fourth quarter. We'll learn from this and we'll be back next year."

Dillard opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run to go up 65-59, but Trenisha Adams drained a 3-pointer to pull Oakwood within 65-62 with 6:19 remaining. The Bleu Devils scored five straight points to extend their lead to 70-62, but Nekaya Williams scored to pull the Ambassadors within 70-64 with just under five minutes left, but they couldn't get any closer.

While Oakwood struggled in the fourth quarter, Dillard sizzled, shooting 53.3 percent (8-of-15) from the field, including 50 percent (2-of-4) from beyond the arc.

Williams led Oakwood with 28 points, five rebounds and three assists. Nariah Alexander finished with 14 points, five rebounds and one assist, while Adams had 13 points, 10 rebounds and four assists.

The Ambassadors shot 38.1 percent (24-of-63) from the field, including 22.2 percent (6-of-27) from deep, and 90 percent (18-of-20) from the free throw line.

Jordyn Rowe led five Dillard players in double figures with 17 points. Sylvia Jones, Asia Dawson and Sydni John-Baptist finished with 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Bleu Devils shot 46.8 percent (29-of-62) from the field, including 38.9 percent (7-of-18) from beyond the arc, and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the charity stripe.
