FISK OUTLASTS OAKWOOD IN CRITICAL GCAC CONTEST

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Brian Williams and Steven Aroh combined for 14 points to key a 20-7 run to help Oakwood University pull within a point with just under two minutes remaining, but Fisk University hit four free throws over the final 47 seconds to come away with a 61-57 victory Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium in a critical Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game.

The Ambassadors trailed 30-29 at intermission, but the Bulldogs came out on fire in the second half and took a 50-36 lead with just over 11 minutes left in the game on a layup by Jayden Lockett.

That's when Williams and Aroh got going.

Williams scored eight points and Aroh added six more to help Oakwood climb back into the game at 57-56 with 1:40 to play, but the Ambassadors couldn't complete the comeback as Fisk sealed the victory with some clutch free throws down the stretch.

The loss, Oakwood's eighth straight, dropped the Ambassadors to 1-19 overall and 1-10 in league play. It was Oakwood's fifth loss by six points or less this season. Fisk improved to 10-11 and 7-5.

Williams and Nicholas Kennard led the Ambassadors with 10 points each.

Oakwood shot 32.3 percent (20-of-62) from the field, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range, and 52 percent (13-of-25) from the free throw line.

Blake Goodman led three Bulldogs in double figures with 22 points. Lockett and Michael Ashley finished with 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Fisk shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field, including 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from deep, and 55.6 percent (15-of-27) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood hosts the University of the Virgin Islands Saturday night at 8:30.
