PROPHETE, OAKWOOD COME UP SHORT DESPITE LATE RALLY

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Judelin Prophete scored 10 of his game-high 18 points during a 22-9 run that pulled Oakwood University within two points of the University of the Virgin Islands with 56 seconds left, but the Buccaneers made five free throws over the final 17 seconds to come away with a 64-60 victory over the Ambassadors Saturday night at Ashby Auditorium in an important Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game.
 
The loss, Oakwood's ninth straight, dropped the Ambassadors to 1-20 overall and 1-11 in league play. UVI improved to 5-14 and 3-10.
 
Oakwood trailed 31-20 at intermission and was down 48-33 before battling back to make a game of it.
 
Prophete's jumper with just over six minutes left capped a 12-2 run to pull the Ambassadors within 50-45.
 
Jaywill Thornton hit two free throws to pull Oakwood within 57-53 at the 1:29 mark and Brian Williams made two free throws with 56 seconds left to make it 57-55, but the Ambassadors couldn't get any closer.
 
It was Oakwood's sixth loss by six points or less this season.
 
Prophete was 9-of-13 from the field and grabbed six rebounds. Williams backed Prophete with 12 points.
 
The Ambassadors shot 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the field, including 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from 3-point range, and 63.6 percent (7-of-11) from the free throw line.
 
Jalil Langston led four UVI players in double figures with 12 points. Vance and Maurice Smith Jr finished with 11 points apiece, while Naythan Shaw-Clarke added 10.
 
The Buccaneers shot 49 percent (24-of-49) from the field, including 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the charity stripe.
 
Oakwood visits Rust College Monday night at 7:30 in a GCAC game.
