WILLIAMS PLAYS LIKE A SENIOR, BUT TOUGALOO TOO MUCH FOR OAKWOOD

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – On a night when Oakwood University honored its four seniors, Nekaya Williams played like one.
 
Fortunately, Williams is only a sophomore.
 
Williams scored a game-high 29 points, but Tougaloo College had a big advantage from the free throw line and went on to down Oakwood 79-67 Saturday night in the regular season finale inside Ashby Auditorium.
 
The Ambassadors fell to 10-18 overall and 7-11 in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.
 
The Bulldogs improved to 7-18 and 6-12.
 
Oakwood trailed 41-30 at intermission and Tougaloo opened the third quarter with a 7-2 run to extend it to 48-32. The Ambassadors answered with a 14-2 run to pull within 52-46 on a jumper by Nariah Alexander with 3:44 to go in the quarter, but never got any closer.
 
Williams was 10-of-18 from the field, including 3-of-8 from 3-point range, and made all six of her free throw attempts. She also had two rebounds, two assists and five steals.
 
Alexander, who was honored along with Mari Dortch Diaz, Denaj'za Jackson and RB Mitchell, finished with 13 points five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Jackson scored 12 points, had one rebound, four assists and two steals.
 
The Ambassadors shot 40 percent (26-of-64) from the field, including 20 percent (5-of-24) from 3-point range, and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
 
Morgan Williams led three Tougaloo players in double figures with 20 points. Jalaceia Smith and Brayland Ferguson finished with 19 and 15 points, respectively.
 
The Bulldogs shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from deep, and 70.6 percent (24-of-34) from the charity stripe.
 
Oakwood will find out today who it will play in the GCAC Tournament, which will be held at Stillman College in Tuscaloosa, beginning Wednesday.
