OAKWOOD BATTLES BACK BUT FALLS SHORT TO RUST COLLEGE IN HBCUAC CONTEST

HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – Down by 20 points at halftime Tuesday night at Rust College, Oakwood University came storming back in the last two quarters.

The Ambassadors outscored the Bearcats 29-5 over a 13-minute stretch covering the third and fourth quarters to pull within 49-45 with just over six minutes left on a layup by Saniya Keys.

Unfortunately, Oakwood couldn't complete the comeback.

Rust outscored Oakwood 12-7 the rest of the way to come away with a 61-52 victory in an important HBCU Athletic Conference game.

"We had to expend too much energy to get back in the game," Oakwood coach Ronnie Abrams said. "We fell behind by 20 points and while I was thrilled we battled back, we never should have been in that situation in the first place.

"After we got back in the game, we didn't have enough to finish it."

The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Bearcats improved to 3-7 and 2-2.

Trailing 40-20 at intermission, Oakwood outscored Rust 16-6 in the third quarter to pull within 46-36 entering the fourth. The Ambassadors continued their comeback attempt with a 9-3 run to get within four at 49-45, but couldn't get any closer.

Trenisha Adams led Oakwood with 16 points. She was 5-of-11 from the field, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range, and made both of her free throws. Adams also had three rebounds.

Keys had 13 points, 14 rebounds and a block, while Kamaria Murray finished with 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including a 3-pointer, and was 3-for-3 from the free throw line.

The Ambassadors shot 38.6 percent (17-of-44) from the field, including 35.7 percent (5-of-14) from 3-point range, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the charity stripe.

Patsy Johnson led three Rust College players in double figures with 18 points. Amber Scott finished with 17, while Michaela Payton had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The Bearcats shot 37.9 percent (22-of-58) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from beyond the arc, and 70.6 percent (12-of-17) from the free throw line.

Oakwood is back in action Friday at Dillard University in the HBCUAC Crossover. Tipoff is 1 p.m.
