THORNTON'S BIG SECOND HALF HELPS OAKWOOD OUTLAST WASHINGTON ADVENTIST

Huntsville, Ala. – Jaywill Thornton scored 10 of his 12 points in the second half, including six in the last three minutes, to help Oakwood University outlast Washington Adventist 61-56 Saturday night in its home opener inside Ashby Auditorium.

Thornton's layup with just over three minutes remaining gave the Ambassadors a 54-47 advantage and less than a minute later, his jumper made it 56-47.

After a Jeray Randle free throw made it 57-47 with just over two minutes left, the Shock battled back.

WAU used a 6-0 run to pull within 57-53, but Thornton responded yet again.

His jumper with a minute remaining gave the Ambassadors a 59-53 advantage and Damon Fann sealed the victory with two free throws with five seconds left to give Oakwood its first win of the season.

The Ambassadors improved to 1-2 with the win. The Shock fell to 0-1.

Randle led Oakwood with 13 points on 4-of-10 shooting, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range. He also had six rebounds.

Thornton was 6-of-9 from the field and had four rebounds. Jordan Bell finished with 12 points on 6-of-14 shooting and had eight rebounds.

The Ambassadors shot 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field, including 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from 3-point range, and 57.1 percent (12-of-21) from the free throw line.

Chase Cooke led the Shock with 14 points, while Anthony Perry added 13.

WAU shot 34.5 percent (20-of-58) from the field, including 33.3 percent (6-of-18) from beyond the arc, and 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the charity stripe.

Oakwood raced out to an early 8-1 lead barely two minutes into the game behind 3-pointers from Fann and Randle and a dunk by Bell.

Another Randle 3-pointer made it 12-5, but the Shock battled back and it stayed close the rest of the half and the Ambassadors led 29-27 at halftime.

Oakwood is at Dalton State Monday night at 6.
