THORNTON, PROPHETE, AROH FINISH IN DOUBLE FIGURES IN LOSS TO PHILANDER SMITH

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Jaywill Thornton scored 17 points and Judelin Prophete and Steve Aroh also finished in double figures, but it wasn't enough as Philander Smith handed Oakwood University its fifth straight loss in a 73-64 setback Thursday night in a Gulf Coast Athletic Conference game at Mims Gymnasium.
 
The Ambassadors fell to 1-16 overall and 1-8 in league play with the loss. The Panthers, who extended their winning streak to 10 straight, improved to 14-5 and 10-1.
 
Oakwood trailed 40-30 at intermission and despite outscoring Philander Smith 34-33 in the second half couldn't overcome the deficit. The Panthers won the game from the free throw line.
 
Philander Smith was 22-of-40 from the charity stripe, while Oakwood was 14-of-23.
 
Thornton was 6-of-9 from the field, including a 3-pointer enroute to his 17 points. Prophete finished with 11 points and five rebounds, while Aroh also finished with 11 points and two rebounds. Aroh was 4-of-8 from the field, including a 3-pointer and made both of his free throws.
 
The Ambassadors shot 36.5 percent (23-of-63) from the field, including 14.3 percent (4-of-28) from 3-point range, and 60.9 percent (14-of-23) from the free throw line.
 
Raymond Reece, the GCAC preseason Player of the Year, led Philander Smith with 19 points and eight rebounds. David Kellah finished with 12 points, while Amorey Womack added 10.
 
The Panthers shot 37.7 percent (23-of-61) from the field, including 29.4 percent (5-of-17) from deep, and 55 percent (22-of-40) from the free throw line.
 
Oakwood visits Wiley College (9-10, 5-6) tonight at 8.
