SUNO HANDS OAKWOOD THIRD STRAIGHT LOSS


Oakwood University men's basketball suffered its third straight loss Thursday night as Southern University of New Orleans came to town and left with a 75-61 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory inside Ashby Auditorium.
 
The Ambassadors fell to 1-14 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Knights improved to 2-15 and 2-4.
 
Oakwood trailed 17-16 midway through the first half after a 3-pointer from Alvin Mokum (Brooklyn Park, MN), but SUNO closed the half on a 21-6 run to go up 38-22 at intermission.
 
The Ambassadors got within 10 on two different occasions in the second half, the last time at 15:42 mark on a jumper by Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) that made it 44-34, but Oakwood couldn't get any closer the rest of the way.
 
Ryan Anderson (Huntsville, AL) led Oakwood with 11 points off the bench. Brian Williams (Colquitt, GA) finished with nine points and seven rebounds. The Ambassadors' two leading scorers, Prophete and Nicholas Kennard (Nashville, TN), who entered the game averaging 11.4 and 10.9 points respectively, combined for just 15 points on 6-of-20 shooting. Prophete grabbed nine rebounds, had two assists, four blocks and a steal.
 
The Ambassadors shot 32.3 percent (21-of-65) from the field, including 27.3 percent (6-of-22 and  ) from 3-point range, and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the free throw line.
 
Jamal Gibson led three SUNO players in double figures with 25 points, 25 rebounds and three blocks. Isaiah Lewis finished with 14 points, while Taj Gilyot and Devin Daniels had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
