OAKWOOD HOSTS SUNO TONIGHT TO START IMPORTANT HOMESTAND

Oakwood University will try to avoid falling into the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference cellar tonight when it hosts Southern University of New Orleans at Ashby Auditorium. Tipoff is 7:30.

The Ambassadors enter the game 1-13 overall and 1-4 in league play. The Knights are 1-15 and 1-4.

Four of Oakwood's next five games are at home and head coach Simon Jacob says the Ambassadors have to take advantage of this homestand in hopes of improving their seeding for the GCAC Tournament.

"We've got a chance to improve our position over the next nine days," Jacob said. "It's up to us as players and coaches."

Tonight's game begins a stretch of five games in nine days, including four at home. The lone road game is at Rust College on Monday. After this five-game stretch, the Ambassadors play six of their last eight games on the road.

If Oakwood is going to get it done, it will have to rely on leading scorers Judelin Prophete and Nicholas Kennard.

Prophete leads the team in four statistical categories: scoring (11.4), rebounding (7.7), blocks (41) and assists (20).

Kennard is averaging 10.9 points and leads the team with 26 3-pointers while shooting 39.4 percent from deep.

SUNO will counter with freshman phenom Jamal Gibson, a 6-foot-7 forward/center from New Orleans.

Gibson is averaging 19.1 points and 15.1 rebounds, while shooting 51 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range. He also has a team-high 38 blocks.
