NASHVILLE, Tenn. –
Amyr Dickerson's jumper with under two minutes remaining gave Oakwood University a five-point lead over Fisk University Tuesday night, but the Ambassadors failed to score the rest of the way as the Bulldogs closed the game on a 9-0 run enroute to a 67-63 Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victory inside Henderson A. Johnson Arena.
It was another heartbreaking loss for Oakwood, which has struggled to finish games this season.
The loss dropped the Ambassadors to 1-13 overall and 1-5 in league play. The Bulldogs improved to 6-9 and 3-3.
Oakwood trailed 33-32 at intermission and appeared to be in position to pick up its first road win of the season after Dickerson's jumper made it 63-58 with 1:47 left, but it wasn't meant to be.
"We've got to learn how to close out games," Oakwood coach Simon Jacob said. "We really needed this one. We were hoping to get this one to give us some momentum for our homestand."
The Ambassadors have to regroup quickly with Southern University of New Orleans coming to town Thursday night. Starting with that game, Oakwood has four of its next five games at home.
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) led the Ambassadors with a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 12 rebounds on 7-of-11 shooting. He also had a team-high three assists and a block.
Jaywill Thornton (Brooklyn, MS) finished with 12 points and four rebounds.
Oakwood shot 40.3 percent (25-of-62) from the field, including 28 percent (7-of-25) from deep, and 60 percent (6-of-10) from the free throw line.
Tyon Thompson paced three Fisk players in double figures with 20 points. Allan Powell finished with 18 points and Jayden Lockett added 10.
The Bulldogs shot 38.8 percent (26-of-67) from the field, including 11.8 percent (2-of-17) from deep, and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the charity stripe.
