HOLLY SPRINGS, Miss. – After trailing by as many as 21 points late in the first half, Oakwood University battled back and pulled within eight points on a couple of occasions down the stretch, but couldn't complete the comeback as Philander Smith College came away with a 66-58 victory Friday afternoon in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up at Rust College's Kinzell Lawson Gymnasium in the W.A. McMillan Center.
The loss was Oakwood's 10
th in a row and dropped the Ambassadors to 2-17 overall and 0-8 in league play. PSC, which improved to 2-0 this season against Oakwood, is now 16-3 and 6-2.
Oakwood fell behind 39-18 late in the first half and never recovered.
Judelin Prophete (Miami, FL) led Oakwood with 11 points.
The Ambassadors shot 39.2 percent (20-of-51) from the field, including 33.3 percent (5-of-15) from 3-point range, and 68.4 percent (13-of-19) from the free throw line.
Aaron Johnson led three PSC players in double figures with 14 points.
The Panthers shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field, including 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (12-of-24) from the charity stripe.
Oakwood is back in action today against Rust College. Tipoff is 7 p.m.
