MARSHALL, Texas – Oakwood University struggled defensively for the second straight game Saturday night as Wiley College came away with a 101-83 victory at Alumni Gymnasium in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Round Up.
It was the second time in as many games the Ambassadors gave up more than 100 points. Oakwood allowed over 100 on Friday in a 103-59 loss to Tougaloo College.
Oakwood fell to 5-19 overall and 3-9 in conference play with the loss. Wiley College improved to 15-8 and 6-6.
The Ambassadors trailed 43-29 at halftime and while playing the Wildcats almost even in the second half, the outcome was never in doubt.
Hannah Cohn (Decatur, AL) led four Oakwood players in double figures with 16 points.
Denaj'za Jackson (Detroit, MI) finished with 12 points, while
Nekaya Williams (Lilburn, GA) and
Timara Taylor (Richmond, TX) had 10 apiece.
The Ambassadors shot 48.5 percent (33-of-68) from the field, including 21.4 percent (3-of-14) from 3-point range, and 53.8 percent (14-of-26) from the free throw line. Oakwood hurt itself with 29 turnovers.
Diamond Hawthorne led five Wiley College players in double figures with 26 points.
The Wildcats shot 44.6 percent (33-of-74) from the field, including 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 63.4 percent (26-of-41) from the charity stripe.
Wiley College outscored Oakwood 35-23 off turnovers and 26-11 in second-chance points.
Oakwood is back in action today against Southern University at New Orleans. Tipoff is noon.
The Ambassadors return home Thursday to take on Fisk University in the final game of the regular season.
